Ok, maybe not a million dollar question. But a question that ranks in the thousands of dollars. Make sure that you do all of your research before you pull the trigger on a new website or a new web design of an old site.

Do you need a website for your business? Yes and No. You need a website if you have a business and marketing plan. Not so much if you are planning on winging it. Don’t ask. I will NOT build a website for you if you are not ready. Even if you give me a check for 1 MILLION DOLLARS. Well, maybe for a million. Only after I write a business and marketing plan for you though…. 🙂

What do you need to ask yourself?

  • Do I have a Marketing Plan?
  • What are my goals?
  • What is my budget?
  • When would I like to see a return?
  • Who is going to do the work?

Typical Q&A conversation with my clients:

Marketing Plan:

Me: Do you have a marketing plan?

Client: No, do I need one?

Me: Yes, the last thing I would want to do is build a nice new website for you and nobody visit it…

Client: Oh, can you help me with that?

Me: Sure!

Note: If any web agency offers to build a website for you without asking about your marketing plan…. RUN! Very FAST!

Goals:

Me: What would you like to accomplish with your new website?

Client: I want it to look cool.

Me: Looking cool is great. Would you like it to work and produce leads and sales for you?

Client: Yes! Doesn’t looking cool give you more sales?

Me: Does Ebay or Google look cool?

Client: No, they are plain websites.

Me: Do you get where we are coming from? Looking cool does not always win. A website that works should be at the top of your list!

Website Goals:

Me: What are your goals for your website?

Client: Why do I need goals for a website?

Me: It is important to know where you want to be and how fast you want to get there. This will help us determine your budget and how fast you would like to start seeing some improvement.

Budget:

Me: What do you have budgeted for your new website?

Client: I don’t know. How much does it cost?

Me: There are many parts to a website budget. There will be an initial cost to building the website. There are additional things we need to consider. A website is always evolving and constant changes need to be made in order to make it the best it can be. Will you need me to manage the site or do you have someone in-house that can do it?

Return:

Me: When do you expect to see a return on your website?

Client: Right away.

Me: That will not be the case. A website is a long-term investment in your business. You will start seeing improvements at the 3,6,9 and 12-month marks. Most websites start seeing great traffic after 12 months if done right. It is important to stay consistent and stay on schedule with your content creation. If anyone tells you that you will see instant results or guarantees first page rankings… If it sounds too good to be true, then it’s probably not true.

Mr. Client: Can you?

Me: Yes, I can. I will need to get a clear plan on how I’m going to promote your website and business prior to launching this new marketing tool.
